Dec 21st, 09 in Community, Travel by Lotus

Congrats to our friends south of the border! Mexico City is now city the first in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage. Buenos Aires legalized same-sex civil unions in 2002 and Uruguay has legalized civil unions nationwide. Now we’re up to seven countries and counting that currently allow gay marriages: Canada, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium. Read more here.

Castro Commons: Make it permanent!

Nov 28th, 09 in Community, The Castro by Mark

The Castro and 17th pilot project has been a smashing success, at least from my point of view. There’s no other public gathering place in the Castro to just hang out with friends, cruise, or eat your Zapata burrito. The problem is, the temporary structures that have in place since May are starting to look like a bit of an eye sore. The planters look like cardboard tubes with scrawny trees planted in them. It’s not a pretty sight! The area has so much potential. It’s time to make this pedestrian area permanent! More »

On Saturday I sat down with local photographer and actor Joe Mazza. Joe’s recent photo work includes two projects for local non-profits: The annual SOMA Bare Chest Calendar, and a great piece of work for the Stop AIDS Project, a 2010 calendar entitled Black Men in the Castro. His recent acting work includes a supporting role in Speed Racer, and you can catch him on tonight’s episode of “Trauma” on NBC. More »

Photo Blogging: Castro Halloween 2009

Nov 1st, 09 in Community, Photo Blogging, The Castro by Mark

The “official” Castro Halloween was cancelled a couple years back because of some downright frightening crimes perpetrated by a bunch of out of town thugs. However, plenty of party goers showed up on Saturday night to show off their ghoulish and campy costumes. Revelers had a fantastic time as SFPD kept a watchful eye for any shenanigans. Check out some of the great costumes from this year’s “unofficial” festivities. More »
