About a hundred students from the Castro’s Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy took to the streets today as part of a statewide “Day of Action.” The students and teachers were protesting the slashing of statewide education budgets.

Mexico City assembly legalizes same-sex marriage
Congrats to our friends south of the border! Mexico City is now city the first in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage. Buenos Aires legalized same-sex civil unions in 2002 and Uruguay has legalized civil unions nationwide. Now we’re up to seven countries and counting that currently allow gay marriages: Canada, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium. Read more here.
Castro Commons: Make it permanent!
The Castro and 17th pilot project has been a smashing success, at least from my point of view. There’s no other public gathering place in the Castro to just hang out with friends, cruise, or eat your Zapata burrito. The problem is, the temporary structures that have in place since May are starting to look like a bit of an eye sore. The planters look like cardboard tubes with scrawny trees planted in them. It’s not a pretty sight! The area has so much potential. It’s time to make this pedestrian area permanent! More »
Support for same-sex marriage gaining
Could the debate over marriage equality resolve itself in our favor over the next 20 years? That may be overly optimistic but it’s not entirely wishful thinking if current trends are any indicator.
SF anti-gay marketing company revealed
Finally, the name of the company that earned nearly $700K to create anti-same-sex marriage ads for Stand For Marriage Maine. As reported by our friends at SF Appeal.
San Francisco company Criswell Associates really earned their money yesterday, as they were successful in in their campaign to strip away the rights of Maine’s same sex couples to marry.

Photo Blogging: Castro Halloween 2009
The “official” Castro Halloween was cancelled a couple years back because of some downright frightening crimes perpetrated by a bunch of out of town thugs. However, plenty of party goers showed up on Saturday night to show off their ghoulish and campy costumes. Revelers had a fantastic time as SFPD kept a watchful eye for any shenanigans. Check out some of the great costumes from this year’s “unofficial” festivities. More »
